Open to the public and located on W. Commercial, the Nave Museum was originally built to serve as a memorial to the late Royston Nave, a fine arts painter who enjoyed a career in New York and Texas. Designed in a neo-classical style and made to look like a Greek temple, the Nave Museum showcases traveling collections from such famous artists such as Mary Cassat, Frieda Kahlo and Andy Warhol, in addition to the annual exhibit titled “El Dia de los Muertos” (Day of the Dead).
The McNamara House was built in 1876 in the Greek Revival style coupled with Victorian accents. Listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings, the McNamara House was originally built for William J. McNamara, a cotton and hide dealer, and his family. Today, visitors can come by and see what life was like during the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Three rooms within the home are restored in period Victorian styling, with some of the McNamara family’s original furniture pieces still housed in the home. Visitors can also take a look at many of the Victorian artworks, dresses, décor, and Victoria’s original town map at the museum.
